Bath

Bath, New York

Home to the longest continuously-running county fair in the United States, Bath maintains its small town quaintness through its historic buildings and architecture, as well as its grand town square where people still gather for everything from live music to other traditional celebrations and events.

Founded in 1793, the town of Bath is where you’ll find the county seat, yet covering nearly 100 square miles it’s also a rural area populated by numerous small farms. Folks here have been growing, harvesting and enjoying locally-grown food as long as they can remember. And visitors can enjoy the bounty of fresh farm-to-table foods at local farm stands, or in one of the Finger Lakes restaurants across the region.

Louis Comfort Tiffany & The First Presbyterian Church

As the only existing church designed by an architect who also had a role in Buckingham Palace, Central Park, and the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art, the First Presbyterian Church of Bath is unique and architecturally appealing. It is also one of the few churches in the entire country with a sanctuary that was redesigned, corner-to-corner, by Louis Comfort Tiffany, who installed breathtakingly beautiful Tiffany stained glass windows.

Crooked Line Farm

Crooked Line Farm

If you visit in the late summer and fall, stop by Crooked Line Farm for the chance to pick (and, probably, sample — hey, we don’t judge) the delicious apples grown there! Make sure to bring the kids, as the farm is home to a family of friendly highland cattle (who also love to sample the tasty apples).

Fish Hatchery

Fish Hatchery

While a fishing experience will connect you with the wild side of Steuben County, some of the fish you’ll be battling may have been raised in a fish hatchery and stocked in local streams and waterways. Fish hatcheries, like the one in Bath, allow the Department of Conservation to produce large numbers of healthy fish to “enhance recreational fishing," and also "to restore native species to waters they formerly occupied."

Nearby Communities Avoca

The small town of Avoca offers a variety of interesting farm experiences.

Take a class on making your own teas at Healing Spirits Herb Farm, and learn a lot in the process. Healing spirits also offers classes in making tinctures and in identifying medicinal herbs (that’s right, you’ll get the chance to learn which which “weeds” in your yard are actually healthy herbs). Not far away is Hemlock Ridge, a certified organic farm that sells beef, chicken, cheese, honey, maple syrup, and vegetables. Also the go to spot for flowers if you’re planning a country wedding.

Want more of a hands-on farm experience? Button’s Creekside B&B is a working farm where you can feed the goats and take on some farm chores during your stay for an authentic glimpse at farm life. Button’s also offers special packages for hunters. With roughly 300 acres of land, which includes a working sheep farm surrounded by forested hills, Button’s Creekside Bed & Breakfast offers seclusion, an authentic taste of farm life, and a special package for hunters.

Cohocton

Cohocton is a small town where the past still lives on. Celebrating its 175-year history, The Olde Country Store and More is evidence of a bygone era. While the store is a popular spot for kids with its wide selection of candies, the Wells family combines the nostalgia of Cohocton’s yesteryear with their own personal history having lived in Germany for years. As a result, they offer a number of wonderful German candies, foods, and products, including glass holiday ornaments and Lauscha Glass figurines. They also sell a number of Green Heart of the Finger Lakes products.

Cohocton is the site of wind farms (and other farms) and its back roads make for scenic bicycle rides. For over 50 years now, the folks here have celebrated the splendor of autumn with the Fall Foliage Festival.
