Corning and the Southern Finger Lakes is one of New York State's most historic areas. From the Gaffer District's own important place in the history of glass making, and the restored architectural wonders that line Market Street, to the people who not only made their mark on the world, but helped make this region famous, you're invited to slip between the pages of history and explore the past.

For architecture and design enthusiasts, Buildings Alive! is a historic and architectural walking tour through the Gaffer District, Corning's famed downtown. Learn about the past lives of the buildings on this self-guided tour. Don't miss a stroll across the Centerway Walking Bridge, which was named American Public Works Association Historic Restoration & Preservation's "Project of the Year" in 2014. The bridge, constructed in 1921 (the same year that the Yankees purchased 20 acres in the Bronx to build another New York landmark, Yankee Stadium) features glass pavers, lawns, perennial gardens and a maze. This unique pedestrian walkway connects downtown Corning's Gaffer District to the Corning Museum of Glass.

Step into bygone era at the Heritage Village of the Southern Finger Lakes in Corning. Watch blacksmith's ply their trade, shop in the country store, and visit the farm animals after exploring the village's buildings, including the Painted Post Tavern, which was constructed in 1796.

Spread your wings at the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum in Hammondsport, where the "Father of Naval Aviation" first fell in love with speed and flight. See original and reproduction aircraft, antique cars, boats and bicycles. Temporary exhibits feature everything from Civil War artifacts to props and costumes from iconic action films such as Indiana Jones and National Treasure.

After exploring the skies, ply the seas at the Finger Lakes Boating Museum on the tip of Keuka Lake, to see more than 100 boats representing the best in design and performance of the last century. Vintage vessels, on-going restoration projects, and boat-building workshops make this a must-stop for any skipper worth his kippers.

Pay your respects at the peaceful campus of the Bath National Cemetery and Historical Museum, which has been serving as hallowed ground for veterans for over 125 years, then marvel at the breathtaking Tiffany-designed sanctuary of the First Presbyterian Church of Bath.

It isn't just our buildings and towns that are historic! The Southern Finger Lakes host an astounding array of annual events that celebrate the arts, culture, and heritage of the region. Spend the day exploring the past, then toast the future at New York's most award-winning winery, where the "father of the vinifera revolution" changed the way wine was made in the Eastern United States.

History was never this much fun! Don't miss a moment; explore Corning and the Southern Finger Lakes now.
