The Mighty Chemung Tour
Mark Twain spent each summer in his octagonal study atop the hill at Quary Farm in Elmira looking down on the Chemung River while writing his most cherished and acclaimed books. The county that bears the river’s name is home to three craft breweries that are quite different from each other in appearance and styles, yet which all focus on creating delicious brews.
First Tasting Room: Diversion Brewing
• Down the road a bit, you’ll find Diversion Brewing whose motto is “built not bought” which aptly represents their willingness to do the work to create something special. You’ll see it in the warm, rustic refurbished, recycled tasting room features. And you’ll taste it in the flavorful small-batch brews. Grab a mason jar tasting glass and enjoy their light-bodied cream ale, hoppy Double IPAs, and other fun creations on the patio.
Next a Local Favorite: Upstate Brewing Company
• Head back to Elmira for a stop at award-winning Upstate Brewing Company. With a mission of crafting beers that appeal to a broad audience, Upstate offers year-round brews and a rotation of several seasonal and limited releases. From pale ales, IPAs, and stouts, to special collaborations, to treats like their barrel-aged Mary Jane’s Veil (imperial stout) and other creative undertakings like Nilla Wafer Stout or Pecan Pie which are part of a series of sweet stout dessert seasonal brews.
Finally: Horseheads Brewing
• Twice named Best Craft Brewery in New York State, Horseheads Brewing uses only the freshest and highest quality ingredients. From hazy to dark to seasonal brews (including a pumpkin ale named most popular in New York State by VinePair and best pumpkin beer for fall by Travel + Leisure). Despite a recent change in ownership, the same award-winning recipes (and some new ones) allow Horseheads to continue to catch people’s attention with their excellent beers.
Mark Twain’s characters often had great adventures. Luckily for you, there are exciting outdoor recreation opportunities nearby like hiking, fishing, paddling, and even glider rides. So stay the night for more great adventures to have tomorow!
Note: the Craft Your Adventure trail spans four counties and each has its own restrictions and guidelines. To assure yourself the best experience, you should always check with the brewery before going to learn about current safety protocols, hours of operation, to-go options, and more.
