A Hector Trio Tour

Brews, Food, and Oh, Those Sunsets

Known for its breathtaking rocky cliffs and dramatic waterfalls, Watkins Glen State Park has been named one of the best parks in the country. Year-after-year, this stunner is one of the top draws in the Finger Lakes region. Located at the southern end of Seneca Lake, deepest of all the Finger Lakes, the town of Watkins Glen is also where NASCAR fans flock each year for their adrenaline fix.

Just outside of town, on the east side of the lake, you’ll find Finger Lakes National Forest (the only national forest in all of New York State), where you can hike, camp, discover the remains of long-forgotten farms, pick heirloom apples, and even enjoy a peaceful horseback ride. Not far from the forest, in Hector, you’ll find a trio of craft breweries that are creating the sort of brews and experiences folks have been craving for a long time.

All three stops offer delicious food, gorgeous views of the lake, and outdoor seating. And the sunsets? Spectacular!

Stop 1: Two Goats Brewing

Slightly north of Hector Falls on the Finger Lakes Scenic Byway, you’ll find Two Goats Brewing. Hungry? Try the “signature” beef-on-weck. It might be the only sandwich they make, but when you do something exceptionally well, you can get away with perfecting that one thing. Of course, they also do another thing exceptionally well and that’s brew delicious traditional style beers like the English Shepherd Brown, Hector Logger, and Goatmaster Kolsch (available all year long). What a way to get started!

We know you might not want to leave just yet, but there’s more tastiness waiting to be enjoyed.

Stop 2: Scale House Brewery

Continue north until you get to Scale House Brewery. Named 2021 “Finger Lakes Brewery of the Year” at the New York International Beer Competition, Scale House offers creative beers, gourmet pizzas and other foods (we’re talking meatball sliders, calzones, paninis . . . you get the picture) and a great spot to hang out with friends. Between the Dirty Blond, Little Sister Kettle Sour, IPAs, and their scrumptious stouts (Peanut Butter, Chocolate, Cannoli), you’re bound to find something you love.

Stop 3: Lucky Hare Brewing Company

Just a little further north is a place where the brewers’ personalities are matched by their creativity and talent. Affable, charming, and passionate, Ian and Tony are establishing Lucky Hare Brewing Company as a not-to-be-missed stop. Be sure to try their gold-winning IPA Falcon Punch, but don’t stop there. This farm brewery is known for a wide range of delicious fresh brews and fun collaborations ranging from IPAs, kettle sours, barrel-aged Russian Imperial Stouts and Belgian style ales.

If you decide to just focus on the beers at these three stops, we get it. The good news is there are several great spots for food (Elf in the Oak, Stonecat Cafe, Grist Iron) on the way back to town. Have a canine friend? Two Goats and Lucky Hare are dog-friendly (though please bring a leash).
