Seaplane Homecoming to Get Some National Air Time

(Hammondsport,NY - September 9, 2010) Glenn Curtiss from Hammondsport might just be one of the smartest people you never learned about in school. But thanks to Rudy Maxa's World, the #1 Travel Radio Show in America, people all over the country will get the chance to learn about the man who helped make aviation what it is today.

With an insatiable passion for speed, Curtiss rode a motorcycle he had built himself over 130 mph and became the fastest man on earth. That was a hundred years ago when the average motor vehicle traveled about 30 mph. But that was just the beginning for Curtiss who eventually took to the air and helped take aviation to new heights, as he held the first public air show in the country, the first long distance flight in the U.S., and later built the first flying boat. You can learn about the many firsts achieved by this small-town boy who ended up changing the world in many ways, as well as about local history at the Glenn H.Curtis Museum located in Hammondsport.

For each of the past seven years, Curtiss who is known as the "Father of Naval Aviation" has been celebrated at the Seaplane Homecoming on scenic Keuka Lake. This year, the event will be garnering some national air time as Rudy Maxa of Rudy Maxa's World, will host a live broadcast from the Curtiss Museum on September 18th. Broadcast on 105 news/talk stations in the U.S. (with an Arbitron-measured audience of 750,000 listeners) as well as on Sirius/XM Radio and the Armed Forces Network, the show is sure to introduce Curtiss to a much broader audience.

"Forover 100 years, Glenn Curtiss has been overshadowed by his contemporaries Orville & Wilbur Wright," said Peggy Coleman, President of the Steuben County Conference & Visitors Bureau. "I am so thrilled that Rudy Maxa will be here to experience the Seaplane Homecoming and to share the amazing innovation of one of our home-town heroes with his listeners world-wide."

The Seaplane Homecoming, held at Depot Park, located at the southern tip of Keuka Lake in Hammondsport, runs from September 17th through the 19th and offers visitors and local residents the opportunity for seaplane rides, great food, and other fun activities. On Saturday, watch the parade of seaplanes fly over Keuka Lake and circle the Curtiss gravesite in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery. Seaplane rides will be given throughout the weekend at the lakefront.
