New Exterior Building Banners Showcase the “West”
CORNING, NY – Whether on foot or driving by in a car, you won't have to second guess what is behind the doors of the historic former City Hall building in Corning's Downtown Gaffer District. New banners, showcasing works of art from the collection of the Rockwell Museum of Western Art, were installed on July 16, 2010, mirroring the themes of several permanent collection galleries. Four new banner designs showcase all things that represent the West – Cowboys, Horses, Native Americans and beautiful landscapes of the Southwest. A total of four new designs, two on the Cedar Street façade and two on the Dennison Parkway side, the banners convey the feel of the West. Details of the following four works of art are featured: "Master of His Domain" by William Robinson Leigh, "Clouds in the Canyon" by Thomas Moran, "The Gunslinger" by Frederic Remington and "A Morning Shower" by Frank Tenney Johnson.
The Rockwell Museum of Western Art brings the best of American Western and Native American art to the East. The Museum is located in the renovated 1893 former City Hall and inside the historic building conveys the feel of the West. Visitors are immersed in a Western experience from the moment they enter the doors. The Museum renews exhibits several times each year, rotating its large permanent collection of art through galleries based on themes: Wilderness, Buffalo, Horse, Indian and Cowboy. Here, myths are explored and new ways of thinking about art encouraged. In addition, two to four special exhibitions per year bring focus to other subjects.
The Corning New York community has displayed a steadfast commitment to the preservation of all things historic and through the preservation of artwork and the historic building; the Rockwell Museum of Western Art is no exception. From architecture to art, the Rockwell Museum of Western Art has upheld a dignified stature and grandeur in Corning's Gaffer District – which makes it the perfect home for displaying the great American West.
Kids and teens (19 and under) are always free and the Museum is open every day, 9 a.m. – 8 p.m. Currently on exhibit is the exhibition, 21st Century Regionalists: Art of the Next West.
