Cozy Up to a Winter Escape in Corning & the Finger Lakes
Last week, we discovered all the wonderful winter adventures Corning & the Finger Lakes has to offer those outdoor enthusiasts. We covered cross country skiing,
snowshoeing, ice fishing, and so much more! We talked about great places to take your sled and spend the day on the slopes. We even discussed where to go for all your winter sporting gear! So you adventure-seekers... you guys are all set! You know where to go, you know what to do. All you need now is for some of that white stuff to start falling from the sky – then it's go time!
But for those of you who are like me and fall into that "wanting to be warm and dry" category when it comes to winter, this blog's for you! (And when you adventuresome types come in from the cold, you can do all these fun things, too!)
My idea of a perfect winter day is cuddling up on the couch with a glass of Finger Lakes wine, watching the snow fall softly outside the window. However, there are only so many days I can take being cooped up in the house. I get a little restless and need to go exploring.
Believe me when I tell you there's nothing like getting lost in the galleries of The Corning Museum of Glass on a quiet winter day. You can really take time to appreciate the beauty of the pieces, and I guarantee you'll find something new, even if you've been there before. (I worked there six summers and always found something new each day I went into work!) You and perhaps only a handful of other visitors will enjoy a practically VIP hot glass show. You'll be able to interact more with the glassblowers. Ask them questions and hear their stories about what it took to learn to make glass. Then you can try it for yourself when you "Make Your Own Glass."
Head over to the Rockwell Museum of Western Art, where you'll be able to explore "the best of the West in the East." Enjoy wandering through deserted galleries, slightly reminiscent of the open spaces of the Wild West. Take time to stroll through, examining each sculpture; considering each painting. Your kids can grab an ArtPack and go on a learning adventure to discover everything from animals of the West to cowboys and Indians.
There's something really special about wineries in wintertime. When you visit Hammondsport on Keuka Lake during the chillier months, you'll notice the summer tourists have all departed, and have left in their wake a serene, crystalline lake, glistening with the quiet beauty of winter. As you drive the roads winding along the lake, you'll come to wineries w
ith nearly-vacant parking lots. I encourage you to get a close spot and walk inside for a very special experience.
"Since Heron Hill Winery on Keuka Lake is open year-round, visiting during the winter is a great way to get a slower-paced, more intimate experience," said Kitty Oliver, Marketing & PR Director at Heron Hill. "The winery slows down during the cold winter months. Guests are more likely to get a chance to meet the winemaker or assistant winemaker during this time. If you are just learning about wine and the Finger Lakes region, it's a great time to visit so you can spend a few hours at the winery and ask questions."
There are so many quieter adventures just waiting to be had during the winter months. Yes, there's plenty of snow fun to delight adventure-seekers here in Corning & the Finger Lakes, but there's so much that will delight and entertain those who prefer to stay warm, as well.
Of course, if you're one of those "in betweeners" who wants to do it all, here's what I suggest: Make a weekend out of your adventure. Stay at the Radisson Hotel Corning and take advantage of their Winter Wine Weekends, Stay Another Day special. When you pay for the first two nights, you'll get the third for free. Take the first day of your trip and go museum and winery hopping. Pick up a bottle of Keuka Lake's finest. Then head outdoors on your second and third days. Go cross country skiing, ice fishing – whatever suits your fancy. When you return to the Radisson after a cold day outside, nothing will warm you up quite like a glass of your new favorite wine.
Cheers to an adventure-filled winter in Corning & the Finger Lakes!
